B and X code is up.
∂15-OCT-75 1402	E,ALS

The "X" and "B" command is now in E but not up on the system. It works but the
data is still not changed every time it should be. This proves to be a bit of a
problem, but it simply means that I have not yet found the optimum place to call
the subroutine. I am looking into it but if you want to work on E just let me
know and I will delay my fix until later.

It seems that the computer is apt to go down before my compilation will
have time to be completed, so you may be left with some trouble. The code is
on page 60 and written as a pushj called routine with a JFCL in the code
where I propose to call it. It is so simple that you can simply ; out
anything that fails to compile.
I had no idea that the system would bog down the way it has. One more sorce
of trouble the cells where the data is to go is on page 141 and trouble
may occur if nothing is stored there as it is expecting an ASCID fill.

I would very much like to work with you in an attempt to fix the INVALID
DIRECTORY bug. I know how to produce it now, but probably not in the way that
it happens with others. This may be a clue and it might leat to a solution,
Somehow I do not seem to be able to solve it alone. 15 out of the last 16
TELLME messages were of this sort.

I thought that most people wanted a double space after a period if it was before
either a space or at the end of a sentence, even though this would on occasion
add an extra space after an abreviation, to guarentee uniformity. Most people
want their finished documents to be better than their typing. I could fix it so
that this would be done only if the next sentence started with a capital, but
this would take a little doing, and even then there would probably be cases
where this was not what was wanted. Certainly the ragged right margin is less
desirable than an occasional extra space.

The punctuation-at-end-of-line bug in ETV JUST has been fixed!!!

To: REG
If you will supply me with a list of what you think are the worst conflicts as to
adjacent keys, I will try to do something about reassigning some commands. The
E vs W problem has been with us from the beginning and in addition the use of
E to exit from ATTACH and from E has always been a pain. I do think that perhaps
it is time to call a halt to any more additions to ETV at least to simple letter
commands. One might add some more X commands, but perhaps that should be all.

I noticed after I sent the last message that I said /N. What I meant was /R, altho
I seem to have typed /N.

ETV does not format an SOS file on the disk when it is read /N altho it does make
a directory for its own use. Of course if your file already had an ETV directory
or if you give a READWRITE command you can then get into trouble. You must have done
something other thaan simply read a standard SOS file, at least I have not been
able to reproduce your trouble. I would like to be shown.

POX is not currently in the favored list used by ETV although PUB is.
Should it be in the list and if so in what order as compared to SAI, FAI F4
etc?

My latest changes had been trivial and had been checked out but I did not think
them to be important enough to justify putting up when the ststem was heavily
loaded.
There seems to be a bug in the handling of a U file. I went to TESTN to test
out the new version with your fix and I found that it had been extended, probablty
by you since I did not do it, anyway I did not want the new last page which was
a copy of a portion of page 2 so I gave a αβ∂αβD command when I got the message
on ERR.ALS, that is I got this message after giving the command. How come?
It could be that the extra page was a bug in itself.
∂21-NOV-75 1328	E,ALS
To: ME
There seems to be a bug in your latest fix which has forced me to back up to
the earlier version. Main symptom seems to be that if one exits while editing
the last page and then reenters E tells you that the file is 2 records shorter
than directory indicates and that it must be reformatted. On reformatting it does
indeed seem to have truncated. However the old E will retrieve the entire
file although it also complains about the truncation which no longer seems to
exist. Ralph was the first to report the trouble and to find that the old E
would retrieve the entire file so you should get the details from him.

The command αβXBURP was specifically designed for this problem. Go th the
page needing BURPing and give this command.
∂24-NOV-75 1355	E,ALS
To: RGH
Supplementing my previour note, I looked at your file and learn that several
pages are bloated, as evidenced by the B number that shows on the trailer lines.
Page 4 is the worst with 48 extra records (of 128 words each) but page 2 shows 2,
page 5 shows 6, page 6 shows 2 and page 8 shows 6. Unfortunately there is not
yet a BURP command for the entire file so you will have to burp each page
separately. By the way you sould make it a practice to look at the E.ALS[up,doc]
file periodically particularly page 2 which contains notes on recent changes to
ETV. Type αβ? when in ETV will switch you to this file.
I would judge that you have made massive deletions from the pages in question
to obtain so much bloat.

The two Frenchmen will be here tomorrow afternoon about 2PM. I told Zadah that
I really should get in touch with several people including you before making a
definite date but they have already made commitments elsewhere for any other time
and rather insist on coming tomorrow.

Two Frenchmen will be here tomorrow afternoon. Zadaah called me about them
and inspite of my objections that I was not the person that they should see
effectively told me that they could only come then and that he would like me to pass the word along to the right people. I believe that theye interested in hand-
ye work almost exclusively. Could you either take them off of my hands or turn
them over to the right people? They will be here at 2PM.

I am the unwilling bearer of news that two Frenchmen will arrive tomorrow at 2PM
who are primarily interested in hand-eye work. I know nothing about them or their
real interests except that Zadah commisioned me to try and find out someone to
take care of them at 2 PM tomorrrow. I remonstrated, suggesting that I would have
to find someone else but he said that they would in effect have to come then or not
at all and that was that. I have sent news to TOB who ras just logged out and to

DDG. I am sending this to you just in case neither of these people see their mail
in time.

I sent a note to TOB, RCB and DDG regardiing a visit today of two Frenchmen
Richard and Giralt but none of them seem to be here at the moment. Would you
like to accept responsibility for them should none of these arrives before
the Frenchmen? They are interested in hand-eye work.
